The Happy Pear is the brain-child of twin brothers David and Stephen Flynn. From opening their first veg store over a decade ago, their dream of creating a health food revoultion has grown. The Irish brothers are now the proud owners of a family-run natural food store, two wholefood cafes, an evening restaurant and a superfood sprout farm.

As they eagerly await the release of their second recipe book, The World of The Happy Pear ( The Happy Pear Cookbook  released in 2014 is still on the Irish bestselling hardback non-fiction list) we thought we’d speak to Stephen for some super-food recipe tips, and to find out what makes them such a happy pair…

How do you like to start your day?

Normally, I get up around 5 -6am. If it’s a nice day I go to watch the sun rise, do a little exercise and have a juice before getting stuck in to whatever’s going on!

I like to have brekkie with my little family and take the kids to school if I can before going off to play shop.

Of all your shops, cafes and farms, where are you happiest working?

When I’m chasing my dreams and doing what I love I tend to enjoy it all really. Some days are harder than others, but as a whole, I adore work – it feels more like play! Having a twin makes it more fun, because we tend to both just enjoy it. We bring out the best in each other.

You have ten minutes to impress someone with a top-nosh dish. What would it be?

Something really simple but elegant: Choked kale,  toasted sourdough bread with advocado, garlic, ripe organic tomatoes, kalamata olives and some sauerkraut – healthy, tasty and beautiful!

What food couldn’t you live without?

My favourite comfort food – porridge! Being Irish, it just feels like home.  We have porridge for dinner at least three times a week.

If you had to choose one food to live on forever, what would it be?

Ripe mango. Living in a tent under a mango tree in Costa Rica during mango season. Lovely!

How do you relax?

I like yoga, swimming in the sea, running with Dave, reading and meditating.

What do you want to inspire people to do, and why?

Mostly to eat more veg, to chase their dreams – no matter how crazy – and to enjoy life.

Why is it so important to you that people eat healthily?

We want to create a happier world, and believe that if people ate more fruit, veg and wholefoods, they would feel better and be happier. Hopefully we would all have a happier life as a result.

What do you feel is your greatest achievement so far?

Getting started, and chasing our big, crazy dream. I think every day has its own little achievements, which add up to become greater. Our greatest thing is our team. We work with wonderful friends, who make the journey so much fun.

What are The Happy Pears plans for the future?

To keep on building a happier, healthier world! This year we will be creating some more products to distribute, our new book is out in June and we’re working on improving our current shop. Ultimately we want to keep on enjoying it, and doing great work!
